Job Creation Activities

At all of our shelters we have such amazing stories. At Kalk Bay we have more than half of our residents involved in our skills training and job creation projects. Here former fishing folk are taught new skills like pottery, tea tray decoration and paper bag making. The project serves three purposes. Firstly otherwise destitute persons are engaged in meaningful activity in a non-judgmental environment and secondly the products produced are of good quality which build self esteem and thirdly the products are sold on the open market which ensures the sustainability of the projects.
At our Paarl Shelter the residents are engaged in bead work and concrete block making. Both of these enterprises realise a small profit and is therefore sustainable. 30 persons mainly evicted off farms are engaged in these projects.
At District Six we have successfully created work for 45 persons cleaning streets, in construction doing painting carpentry and glazing. This shelter will be tendering on Intersite cleaning contracts and develop a training course for domestics in 2003.
At Napier Street they are producing hand made paper, and export quality pottery. 22 persons are involved in these two projects. The pottery project is doing well and we expect to be able to involve more persons in an expanded production facility.

| PAARL - We are so pleased to share the following success story. One evening at 9pm an untidy, cold and hungry person knocked on the door of Paarl shelter. This shelter normally admits people between 6pm and 8pm but because of the cold weather Nic Le Roux the manager opened his heart and the doors of Paarl Haven Night Shelter to the man. After three weeks in the shelter during which time he was taken up in the bead work project the man felt sufficiently encouraged to indicate to his fellows that he was a qualified teacher. One thing led to another and within a month he was employed in a school in Athlone. We are so proud of our teacher friend who now lives on his own doing what he is qualified to do - teach. As we say in the Haven you the donors and supporters enable us to meet people at the time of their greatest need. With a small gesture we were able to support our teacher friend to regain his equilibrium. We wish him well. |
