Treasurer’s Report

In the year ending 31 March 2008, the Haven generated revenue of R 9.8 million, an increase of 21% compared to the previous year. One third of our income came from shelter fees paid by our clients, one third from PAWC Social Services, with the remaining third from fund raising, grants and other sources of income.

We were grateful to the City of Cape Town, Community Chest, Grand West/KfM and the DG Murray Trust who all gave us significant grants this year. We did not receive any funds from the Lotto during the year under review; however, we are happy to report that significant funds were received from the Lotto in the new financial year. We would like to thank every donor and in particular those mentioned in our annual report.

The Haven’s expenses were R 9.9 million for the year, an increase of 13%, which is slightly more than inflation. Staff costs accounted for 55% of our expenses, which is appropriate in view of our commitment to the welfare and rehabilitation of our clients. To achieve this, it is important to have the correct staff levels, especially in the areas where help can be given such as social workers. Client welfare accounts for 14% of the expenses followed by administration costs, municipal costs and training.

Our auditors, HLB Marx Gore, have completed the audit for the year and have issued their audit opinion which is attached to the annual financial statements.
